Emily Hortense Budell
Emily Hortense Budell was born March 23, 1884 in Lyon, France. Although the family home was in Westfield, New Jersey, after the birth of her older sister Ada, the Budell family had temporarily moved to France concerning family business at the time of Hortense's birth.
Budell's art studies included instruction under John F. Carlson in Woodstock, Henry B. Snell and George Elmer Browne.
Hortense Budell (she preferred using her middle name) was a member of a great many arts organizations and exhibited extensively, winning numerous medals, awards and prizes at the following venues: the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Art Club, the Montclair Art Museum, the American Watercolor Society, the National Association of Women Artists, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Allied Artists of America, the Philadelphia Art Club and the National Arts Club.
Miss Budell also contributed to the short-lived "Museum of Nations", which had been established in Asbury Park in 1932.
Emily Hortense Budell, who had never married, died March 28, 1981 in Westfield, New Jersey, at 97 years of age.
